Velocity Detection, a division of Zeta Alarms, announces its state-of-the-art aspiration smoke detection systems designed to detect fires at the earliest possible stage. The VDOT-ASD series provides solutions for early warning and highly sensitive fire detection across single and multi-zone environments.
Advanced early warning technology
Built on cutting-edge blue LED light scattering technology, both models in the Velocity range provide ultra-sensitive smoke detection capable of identifying fires in their earliest, often invisible, stages. With a detection sensitivity of up to 0.005%/m, the detectors are 1,000 times more sensitive than conventional point-type smoke detectors making them ideal for the protection of high-risk or high-value buildings.
What is aspiration smoke detection?
Aspirating smoke detection is an advanced method of fire detection that works by actively drawing air from protected areas, through a network of sampling pipes, into a central detector. Inside the detector, the air is continuously analysed for the presence of microscopic smoke particles.
This approach enables the detector to identify the earliest signs of a fire, often before smoke is visible to the human eye. This makes ASDs ideal for environments where early warning is critical, such as data centres, cleanrooms, and heritage sites. Aspirating detectors are particularly effective in challenging conditions where traditional smoke detectors may be less reliable or too slow to respond.
Two models catering for most applications
The Velocity ASD range comprises two models; the VDOT-ASD-100 single zone detector designed to protect small areas and the VDOT-ASD-400 4 zone detector for larger areas.
VDOT-ASD-100: single zone ASD
- Single pipe configuration with coverage up to 1,000m²
- Multiple pipe network options (single pipe or 2/4 branches)
- Four alarm levels with adjustable time delays (Alert, Action, Fire-1, Fire-2)
- 7 configurable relay outputs (2A@30 VDC)
- Compact design
VDOT-ASD-400: 4-zone ASD
- Four-pipe system with coverage up to 2,000m²
- Enhanced pipe network options with optimised pipe length of 4x100m (4×18 holes)
- Optional zone relay board with 16 additional configurable relays
Intelligent features across the range
Both models incorporate the following advanced features;
- 24/7/365 Environmental Learning: Continuous smoke background level learning ensures accurate detection while minimising false alarms
- Comprehensive Flow Monitoring: Heat mass detection technology normalises pipe flow to 100% with adjustable sensitivity and high/low fault detection
- 3-in-1 Front Panel Display: Intuitive control interface with reset, isolate, silence, and test functions
- Advanced Visual Indicators: 20-segment smoke level indicator and 6-digit numerical LED display showing real-time smoke and airflow levels
- Network Capabilities: RS-485 network supporting up to 250 devices with built-in repeaters and compatibility with Modbus RTU open protocol
- Versatile Operating Conditions: Functions in ambient temperatures from 0-40°C and can sample air from -20 to 60°C with humidity range of 10-95% RH
Comprehensive design support service
Velocity offers a comprehensive design support service to help engineer the perfect aspiration solution to meet project requirements. This service includes expert pipe network design and precise flow calculations. These tailored reports help verify the suitability of the system and longterm optimum operation.
Certification & approval
The VDOT-ASD series has received FM Approval attesting that these products meet the highest industry standards for performance and reliability.
“Our Velocity ASD range represents the pinnacle of early fire detection technology,” said Jonathan Summers, Global Sales Manager at Velocity Detection. “The ability to detect smoke particles during the incipient stage of any fire where smoke particles are not even visible to the naked eye is invaluable. The earliest possible stage of detection provides the critical time to investigate and respond to an event before it escalates, saving property, valuable stock and ultimately human lives.”
